The Andalusia Police Department has apprehended a man who allegedly stole a purse from an elderly woman in Walmart Monday afternoon.

Jeshua D. Paulk

Chief Paul Hudson said the APD was called to Walmart at about 1 p.m. Monday. An 85-year-old woman who was one of Walmart’s mobility assistance carts had been approached by a man who distracted her by his comments, then took her purse.

Police were able to use surveillance video to track the suspect’s movements through the store, and to identify where he had left her purse, empty wallet, and cell phone, all of which was recovered. The victim was not harmed.

After posting images of him on social media, they were able to identify him as Jeshua D. Paulk, 47. He was arrested in the Paul Community on Tuesday afternoon.

Paulk, who was on probation from California charges of larceny, was arrested and charged with theft of property first degree. He also had an outstanding misdemeanor charge.

Paulk’s bond has been set at $100,000.

The APD expressed its appreciation to Walmart’s asset protection team for its assistance in solving the case.
