The Covington County Board of Education approved Carie Turman as the next Florala High School principal and 18 additional personnel items at a special called meeting Monday, May 22.

Turman was named the interim principal at FHS in February after the sudden passing of Max Whittaker.

During the meeting the board also approved:

Retirement

• Scott Gafford as teacher at Fleeta Junior High School effective at the end of the 2022-2023 school year

Resignation

• Angelina Driver as teacher at FJHS effective at the end of the 2022-2023 school year
• Taylor Kelley as teacher at FHS effective at the end of the 2022-2023 school year

Rescind

• Hiring of Shanna Davis as elementary teacher at Straughn Elementary School effective immediately

Leave of Absence

• Granting a medical leave of absence with benefits under the Family Medical Leave Act to Joea McNeil Stuart, counselor at FHS for the month of May

Transfer

• Brianna Leitschuck from math teacher at FHS to math teacher at W.S. Harlan Elementary School effective at the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year
• Elisa Dye Mount from counselor/special education teacher at WSH to special education teacher at Red Level School effective at the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year
• Troy Turman from teacher at FHS to math intervention/physical education teacher at FJHS effective at the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year

In other business, the board recognized sports teams and track athletes from Red Level School and Pleasant Home School. The board set the next meeting date for June 6, 5:30 p.m., at the central office.
