The Andalusia Bulldogs fell short in a defensive battle with Hillcrest-Evergreen, 13-10.
Both teams scored in the first quarter and Andalusia led by a score of 7-6 for much of the first half. With less than a minute to go in the half, Hillcrest found the endzone and made the point-after to take a 13-7 lead into the half.
Andalusia’s Cobb Stewart would put up the only points in the second half with a field goal in the third quarter that cut the Jaguar lead to 13-10.
Both teams’ defenses kept the opposing offenses off the field. Andalusia did have a chance to tie the game with a 46-yard field goal with only one second to go, but the attempt was blocked, securing the victory for Hillcrest.
Head Coach Trent Taylor was proud of the team for their efforts on defense after halftime.
“What a great job by our defense in the second half. We gave them a short field for one of their touchdowns in the first half and then came out in the second half to completely shut them down,” Taylor said.
Taylor added that the Bulldogs are still learning about themselves.
“I know this bunch and how they reacted to last week’s loss. We will see how they react after tonight. We had some injuries that certainly hindered us and hurt us depth wise,” he said.
With the loss, Andalusia falls to 0-2 on the season. The Bulldogs open region play next week with a road trip to Headlead (2-0).
“We have to get ready to start region play and go back to work next week,” Taylor said.
