COLUMN: ‘News of Our Boys in the Armed Forces’ – February 22, 1945

Mrs. Iva Adams of Rt. 1, Andalusia, recently heard from her son, Woodrow Adams, Staff Sgt., U.S. Army. He writes that he is recovering nicely after being wounded in action on the Belgian front. Sgt. Adams was originally reported as missing in action.

Derwood J. Padgett, Tech Four, U.S. Army Air Corps, has recently been promoted to Tech Five. He is currently serving in an advanced base in the Marianas with the 7th AAF Aviation Engineer Battalion. He has been helping build B-29 Superfortress airstrips and facilities for bombing Japan. Padgett worked for Carlton Construction Company in Mobile before entering military service in June 1943. His father, Earnest G. Padgett, lives in Mobile. His wife, the former Myrtice Bass, lives in Andalusia. He also has a brother, Herman, who is serving in the Army Air Corps.

Joe Donaldson, Sgt., U.S. Army, and his wife, the former Edna Louise Brawner, recently spent a 10-day leave with her family in Andalusia. They have returned to Daytona Beach, Fl., where Sgt. Donaldson is stationed at the Welch Community Hospital. He returned to the States on Jan. 27 after serving one year in the European theater of operations. Sgt. Donaldson joined the Army in 1937 and spent five years in the Panama Canal Zone.

James Ramer, SN1, U.S. Navy, recently wrote his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Ramer, 423 Tisdale St. in Andalusia, that he would be leaving his duties in the Southwest Pacific soon. He would like to hear from his friends [address can be obtained from his parents]. Ramer received his education from Andalusia city schools.

Edward E. Smith, Staff Sgt., U.S. Army Air Corps, of Andalusia, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene C. Smith of Leesville, S.C., and husband of Mrs. Lettie F. Smith of 200 Packer St., Andalusia, is a gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress, assigned to the 95th Bombardment Group, commanded by Colonel Jack E. Shuck of Casper, Wy. Staff Sgt. Smith is currently taking an orientation course on the B-17 Flying Procedures prior to beginning combat duty in the air. The 95th Bombardment Group is part of the 8th Air Force, which led the first bombing attacks on Berlin. As a component of the 3rd Air Division, they were cited by the President for their bombing assault on the railroad marshalling yards at Munster in Oct. 1943. The entire division was also cited by the President for its historic England-Africa shuttle bombing of an important Messerschmitt fighter plane plant at Regensburg, Germany, in Aug. 1943.

Lonzie R. Spivey, Staff Sgt., U.S. Army Tank Corps, has recently returned from 26 months service in the European theater. He will arrive at Ft. McPherson, Ga. around Feb. 11, before visiting his wife, Mrs. Annie Bell Spivey, of Red. Level.
