Lady Bulldogs open softball season with win over McKenzie

Andalusia erupted for six runs in the second inning and opened the 2025 softball season with a 12-2 win against McKenzie at home on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Madelyn Bell led off the top of the first with a single before Kailey Jackson struck out the side. Alyson Brooks needed only 12 pitches for a 1-2-3 bottom half as the game stayed scoreless after one inning.

Jackson held McKenzie (0-2) in check and recorded two pop-ups and a strikeout in the visiting second. Jessa Ann Dubose led off the home half with a single before Jackson walked. Kenzie Barrow then singled as Dubose and Jackson both scored on an error. Lacey Wells reached on another miscue, and Barrow scored the third run. Austin Seal reached on another mistake and sent Wells to the plate. Seal scored on a groundout, while Madi Everett crossed home and gave Andalusia (1-0) a 6-0 lead after two innings.

Trenady Pierce delivered a one-out single in the top of the third, but Jackson struck out the next two Lady Tigers. Blakelynn Bass hit an inside-the-park three-run homer in the bottom half and lifted the Lady Bulldogs to a 9-0 lead after three innings.

Shelby Bennett began the fourth with a double and scored the first McKenzie run on an error. Taya Newton reached on a miscue and earned a pair of stolen bases. Newton was caught stealing home, but Jackson launched a solo home run for a 10-1 lead. Barrow followed with a walk before Wells singled and put runners on first and second. Seal brought home Barrow as Andalusia took an 11-1 lead after four innings.

Pierce reached on a fielder’s choice in the fifth and scored on a two-out error. Newton delivered the game-winner with an RBI double and drove in Bass as the game ended via the mercy rule.

Barrow finished the game 2-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI. Newton was 2-for-4, while Bass had a 1-for-3 showing with two runs scored and four RBIs. Jackson earned the win for the Lady Bulldogs and allowed two unearned runs on four hits in five innings. Bennett, Bullard, and Pierce all went 1-for-2. Brooks suffered the loss and threw 4 1/3 innings for the Lady Tigers.

Andalusia will remain home for a matchup with Opp (2-2) on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
