After years of planning, a remodeling project for the Covington County E911 and Communications Center is moving forward.
According to E911 Director Frank Shaffer, the board approved the low bid of just over $540,500 to Wyatt Sasser Contracting for performing the construction project. The bid was approved during a board meeting on Friday, Feb. 14.
“For the last couple of years, the E911 board, our consultant, and our architecture team have been working on a plan to complete this remodel project,” Shaffer said. “This project is one of a vast and meticulous nature as there are a lot of moving parts required to get it accomplished.”
Shaffer said the project will include a remodel for the front of the office to include a more modern facade, adding that visitors to the center will notice an officer trailer as well as other vehicles and machinery connected to the project in the parking lot.
“This means there will be a lot of activity in and around our location. We want people to know that over the next few months there will be some noise, dust and potentially some unsightly rubble in and around our property. We ask that you, ‘Pardon Our Progress,’ as this remodel is going on,” Shaffer said.
The E911 Center will remain fully operational throughout the project.
“I can reassure everyone that as this construction project commences, we will be diligent to answer every call both general and emergency. It is our expectation to not miss one single call during this project’s life cycle. There will be times when we will have to allow power outages in some power transfers as well as data transfers but be assured that our number one priority is meeting the needs of our partners and citizens,” Shaffer said.

The next regular meeting of the E911 Board is scheduled for Wednesday, March 19, 1 p.m., at the Covington County Administration Building, 260 Hillcrest Dr. in Andalusia. The meeting is open to the public.
