Monday, Feb. 24 was a special day for Opp High School head baseball coach Michael Cassady as he earned his 300th career win with the Bobcats.
Now in his 16th season, Cassady reached the milestone when Opp held on for an 11-7 home win against Houston Academy. The Bobcats pushed their record to 5-0 and are off to their best start since 2011.
“I would like to thank everyone for the kind posts and comments for reaching #300 in baseball,” Cassady said. “I also want to thank all the coaches that have helped and been a part of all these wins the past 16 years. Without these guys, a lot of these wouldn’t have happened. I would also like to thank the players that helped reach these wins as well. To this year’s group, we aren’t finished and have just begun. I can’t wait to see how this season ends up.”
Opp took a 9-1 lead into the sixth inning before Houston Academy scored six times and closed the gap to 9-7. The Bobcats answered with two runs in their half of the frame for the final tally.
Porter Nelson finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Landon Langley was also 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Baylor Turman went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored as Cash Harrell had a 1-for-2 showing with an RBI and three runs scored.
Nolan Brown was named the winning pitcher and allowed one unearned run on one hit and struck out five in two innings. Nelson came on in relief and tossed three shutout innings with five strikeouts.
Opp travels to Enterprise for two games on Saturday, March 1, at 11 a.m., and plays Liberty County, Florida, at 1:30 p.m.
