The Alabama Bureau of Investigation will investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred Sunday, March 2, in the Red Level area.

According to Covington County Sheriff Blake Turman, at approximately 4 a.m. Sunday, 911 dispatch received multiple 911 hang-up calls from a male subject who is known to local law enforcement. A deputy was dispatched to the man’s home on County Road 21 in Red Level for a welfare check.

“Upon arrival, the deputy noticed the lights in the home were on, and as he approached, a vehicle rammed through the gate, charging the officer. Chad Sheehan, a non-resident, exited the vehicle with a firearm and charged at the officer. The deputy fired several shots, striking Sheehan,” Turman said in a press release.

Officials said the deputy performed life-saving measures and Sheehan was transported to the Andalusia hospital. Turman said the sheriff’s office is “overseeing Sheehan’s care at the hospital to ensure public safety.”

The deputy was not injured.

The shooting incident will be investigated by Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation, as is normal protocol involving officer shooting incidents. Turman said charges will be filed against Sheehan.

“We will keep the community informed as the situation unfolds,” Turman said. “Currently, there is no public safety risk from Sheehan. I want to thank River Falls Police Chief Marcus Laster and the ALEA State Bureau of Investigation for their assistance and response. Also, thanks to Covington County E-911 for their forethought of a potentially bad situation.”
