The Andalusia Lady Bulldogs fell behind at home to Brantley Monday night, but managed to stay within striking distance until a four-run sixth inning secured the victory for the visitors, 10-5.
Andalusia outpaced Brantley in hits, nine to six, but Brantley pitcher Alex Grimes kept the Lady Bulldogs at bay, striking out 15 batters.
Kailey Jackson started in the circle for Andalusia and struck out five batters in 5.1 innings of work and gave up only two earned runs on six hits. Taya Newton finished the game with 1.2 innings pitched and struck out two Brantley batters.
Brantley took an early lead when Marley Kilcrease hit a run-scoring double in the top of the first. Andalusia came right back in the bottom of the inning when Newton led off with a double and was brought home on a single by Reese.
A couple of defensive miscues led to Brantley getting two runs in the second and increased the lead to 4-1 in the top of the third inning.
Andalusia closed the gap in the bottom of the fourth. Jessa Ann Dubose led off the inning with a single. An error on bunt allowed Madi Everett to reach base and proceed to second with Dubose going to third. McKenzie Barrow brought both runners home with a line-drive single to left, cutting Brantley’s lead to 4-3.
Fielding errors hurt the Lady Bulldogs in the top of the fifth, leading to two more runs as Brantley once again separated themselves from the home team, 6-3.
Leading off for Andalusia in the bottom of the fifth, Newton hit a single to centerfield, stole second, reached third on a wild pitch, and then scored on another wild pitch. With one out, Andalusia’s Kailey Jackson hit a long double about halfway up the centerfield fence, but would end up stranded on third to end the inning with the Lady Bulldogs behind, 6-4.
Brantley increased its lead to 10-4 with four runs in the top of the sixth with a couple of errors and a passed ball helping its cause.
Andalusia managed one more run in the bottom of the fifth when a single by Lacey Wells brought Stella Wells home after she had led off the inning with a single.
Newton and Reese led the Lady Bulldogs with two hits each. Barrow finished the game with two RBI. Jackson and Newton each had doubles for Andalusia.
With the loss, the Lady Bulldogs fall to 6-4 on the season. They will host Highland Home on Monday, March 10, at 6 p.m.
Brantley improves to 2-2 with the victory.
