One person was killed in a shooting incident Tuesday night in Covington County.
According to the Covington County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to Oscar Pugh Road, off of Babbie Road, at approximately 8 p.m. after receiving reports of shots fired and one person wounded.
Once at the scene, a white male refused to exit the residence leading to a standoff. Deputies called for additional assistance from within the department — including the Covington County Incident Response Team — as well as other agencies. Ultimately, the suspect Edward Morgan, 60, was taken into custody and charged with murder. He was booked into the county jail with a $500,000 bond.
Sheriff Blake Turman said the male victim, identified as Robert Morgan, a family member of the alleged shooter, was transported to Mizell Memorial Hospital, but died as a result of the gunshot wound.
“This incident is tragic and uncalled for,” Turman said in a released statement. “Although the investigation is still underway, there can be no excuse for domestic violence in any form. The collective efforts of all agencies involved ensured an effective response to the situation. Within minutes, there were officers from many departments on the scene to assist.”
Departments responding to assist the Covington County Sheriff’s Office included the Covington County Incident Response Team, Opp Police and Fire departments, Andalusia Police Department, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (both troopers and agents), River Falls Police Department, Florala Police Department, the District Attorney’s Office, and the Covington County Sheriffs Reserve and Posse.
