Pleasant Home falls to Kinston in area opener

Pleasant Home fell behind by seven runs in the second inning and could not recover as Kinston rolled to a 15-1 win in varsity softball action on Thursday, March 6.

The Lady Bulldogs moved to 13-2 overall and 1-0 in 1A Area 2, while the Lady Eagles fell to 1-3 and 0-1.

Lilli Sumblin reached on an error with one out in the top of the first but was thrown out attempting to steal second. Camdyn Norris earned a walk but was left stranded after a flyout. Adi Burks was hit by a pitch in the home half and stole second. Lauren Norris struck out two and kept the game scoreless after an inning.

Kinston saw its offense come to life with a seven-run second. Aubrey Norris brought home L. Norris with the first run on an RBI double. Maddie Williamson followed with an RBI single and cashed in A. Norris. Lyla Bruce singled and put runners at the corners with no outs. M. Williamson scored on a passed ball before Taylor McKinney sent Bruce to the plate. Sumblin scored McKinney on a sacrifice fly, and an error led to the final two runs. Pleasant Home put a base runner aboard when Lacey McCranie was hit by a pitch, but the score stayed 7-0 at the end of two innings.

Neither side threatened in the third inning. Sumblin opened the top of the fourth with a walk as C. Norris singled. Allyx Williamson then hit a three-run blast and lifted the Lady Bulldogs to a 10-0 lead. L. Norris followed with a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bruce. Jaiden Reed put the Lady Eagles on the board with a solo homer and took the score to 11-1 after four innings.

Madison Jones led off the visiting fifth with a walk and stole second. C. Norris then ripped an RBI double and drove in Jones. A. Williamson then laced an RBI single and scored when A. Norris hit an RBI double. M. Williamson capped the scoring with an RBI single for a 15-1 lead. L. Norris struck out the side in order as the game was called early.

Reed was 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI for Pleasant Home. M. Williamson went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs for Kinston. A. Williamson finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBIs.

The Lady Eagles continue area play with a game at Florala on Thursday, March 13, at 4:30 p.m.
