Florala competed in the Prep Baseball Alabama Small Town Showdown at Sand Mountain Park in Albertville, Alabama, on Friday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, March 1.
The Wildcats were the only 1A school in attendance and finished the event with a 1-2 record. Their season record stands at 5-3 following a road loss at New Brockton on Thursday.
“I am very proud of these young men. Two of the three teams we faced were in the final four in their respective classes last season. We competed every game and showed a lot of grit and competitiveness in the face of constant adversity,” Head Coach Tyler Zessin said.
Florala defeated 3A Lauderdale County, 7-5, in the first game. Dalton Jackson hit a home run for a 4-1 lead in the second inning. Easton Walsh, Noah Bryan, and Greyson West each recorded a hit. Walsh allowed one earned run and struck out 11 in the complete-game win.
The Wildcats recorded 13 hits in their second game and led by two runs in the seventh inning but fell to 3A Gordo, 8-5. Walsh, West, and Ayden Brooks each tallied two hits, while Jackson added three hits including another home run. Bryan, Jacob Lara, Dawson Reeves, and Rayshon Coleman rounded out the effort with a hit each. Bryan gave up three earned runs and struck out five in 5 2/3 innings on the mound.
Florala had a 9-0 loss to 2A Bayshore Christian in the final game of the event. Bryan and Lara each picked up a hit.
The Wildcats return to the field Monday, March 10, at Elba with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
