LBW Community College President Dr. Brock Kelley was recently presented with the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society’s Alumni Hall of Honor Award for the Alabama Region.
LBW instructor and Alpha Beta Eta chapter PTK advisor Shannan Spurlin and chapter officers nominated him for the award.
“Phi Theta Kappa plays such a huge role in providing opportunities to our students. I am honored to be recognized as an alumnus,” Kelley said.
Dr. Kelley actively promotes PTK and is a dedicated advocate for student success, supporting recruitment, induction ceremonies, and promoting transfer scholarships to four-year universities.
“Dr. Brock Kelley has played a pivotal role in strengthening the Alpha Beta Eta chapter, particularly through his strategic partnership with the Lurleen B. Wallace Foundation. His dedication and proactive approach have been instrumental in elevating both the visibility and the effectiveness of the chapter, ensuring that its impact on the student body continues to grow,” Spurlin said.
According to Spurlin, Kelley has made joining Phi Theta Kappa more financially feasible for students.
“Another critical aspect of Dr. Kelley’s assistance has been his involvement in securing reduced membership fees for students. Dr. Kelley has helped ensure that the opportunities and benefits associated with PTK such as access to scholarships, networking opportunities, and leadership development are accessible to a broader group of students, particularly those who may face economic challenges. All of these efforts have culminated in a more active chapter that continues to attract new members and provide current members with a wealth of opportunities,” she said.
LBW recently announced Phi Theta Kappa’s Alpha Beta Eta chapter became a five-star chapter.
“Through mentorship and strategic guidance, he encouraged members to set ambitious goals for college completion, while simultaneously challenging them to engage more deeply in the chapter’s initiatives. He worked closely with the chapter’s leadership to redefine its mission and reinvigorate its activities, ensuring that every member could find a role that aligned their skills and passions. This revitalization led to increased involvement, higher levels of student achievement, and a more engaged, cohesive chapter,” Spurlin said.
Phi Theta Kappa is the honor society of the two-year college system and recognizes students who excel academically with more than 1,000 chapters nationwide. Requirements of full-time students are the achievement of a 3.5 GPA or above, good citizenship, and high moral standards.
