The April meeting of the Covington Historical Society will be held on Thursday, April 24, 6 p.m. at the Charles Dixon Room of the Andalusia Public Library.
Amy Russell Spurlin will present a program about the history of Methodism in Andalusia. The Methodists recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of their congregation’s move to a new church building in 1926.
For those Methodists who missed the anniversary celebration for one reason or another and for those who attend other churches but who are interested in this important part of Andalusia’s history, the invitation is cordially extended. The public is invited to attend this presentation by Spurlin, a long-time resident of Andalusia and fourth generation citizen.
Have you ever heard someone say, “I wonder why that street is called Church Street when there is not a church located on it?” Come to the historical society’s meeting and you’ll be sure to find the answer to that question.
The Covington Historical Society was founded in 1976, the Bicentennial year, to preserve and publicize the history of Covington County. Programs through the years have been presented about schools, churches, buildings, streets, neighborhoods, citizens, wars, businesses, homes, builders, railroads, depots, courthouses, public officials, clubs, rivers, bridges, floods, saloons, hotels, parks, hospitals, sports, libraries, events, and county communities. Membership is open to all local and former citizens. Dues are $25 per year and can be mailed to CHS, P. O. Box 1582, Andalusia, AL 36420. The Three Notch Museum is a project of the Covington Historical Society.
