Andalusia, Opp earn wins in first area tournament softball games

(Editor’s Note: The following are highlights from the first games of the softball area tournament played Friday afternoon. The remainder of the games, played after our print deadline, will be featured at andalusiastarnews.com and in Wednesday’s print edition.)

Andalusia 16, Charles Henderson 0
Andalusia rolled to a 16-0 win over Charles Henderson in the second game of the 5A Area 3 Tournament at home.

Taya Newton led off the bottom of the first with a double, stole third, and scored on an RBI groundout by Austin Seal. Two hit batters and a walk led to three runs and upped the margin to 4-0 after one inning.

Kailey Jackson continued to shine with two strikeouts in the top of the second.

Andalusia broke the game wide open with 12 runs in its half. Newton launched a three-run homer that drove home Lacey Wells and Stella Wells who had singled. An RBI double by Jackson and RBI single from McKenzie Barrow extended the lead to 9-0. After an error pushed the score to 11-0, Newton cleared the bases with a three-run triple. Newton scored on a wild pitch before Sarah Katherine Reese lifted a sacrifice fly to center for a 16-0 lead after two innings.

Charles Henderson had a double from Keirstin Gamble in the top of the third and a walk to Alaynah Vaznaian, but a double play ended the game early.

Newton led Andalusia at the plate and finished a single shy of the cycle at 3-for-3 with three runs scored and  six RBIs.

Jackson earned the win with three shutout innings and allowed just one hit with two strikeouts.

The Lady Bulldogs (28-8) advanced to the championship game against the Charles Henderson-Greenville loser.

Opp 15, New Brockton 0
Opp opened the 4A Area 4 Tournament at home with a 15-0 win over New Brockton.

The Lady Bobcats struck fast with five runs in the first. Jaidyn Ivey stole home as Addison Moseley cashed in Taylor Adams with an RBI single. After an RBI single by Bradleigh Lanier, Autumn Green knocked a two-run homer for a 5-0 lead after one inning.

Following a scoreless second inning, Opp extended its lead to 8-0 in the third. Green hit her second homer of the game for a 7-0 lead. Madi Wilson doubled and came home on an RBI single by Lanier for an 8-0 lead after three innings.

Moseley held the Lady Gamecocks in check in the top of the fourth.

Crislyn Birge and Moseley stretched the lead to 10-0 with RBI singles in the home half. Wilson and McKenzie Henderson each drew a bases-loaded walk for a 12-0 lead. Lilyann Coleman brought home Green before Jaelyn Myers hit a two-run single and ended the game.

Green went 2-for-2 with three runs and four RBIs. Moseley and Ivey both finished 2-for-3 as Opp tallied 12 hits in the win.

Moseley notched the win with four shutout innings and gave up only two hits with eight strikeouts.

The Lady Bobcats (29-9) advanced to play the Straughn-Pike County winner on Monday at 1 p.m.
