Opp claimed its fourth straight area softball title with an 8-0 win over rival Straughn in the 4A Area 4 championship game at home on Monday, April 28.
The Lady Bobcats won for the 15th time in 16 games and improved to 31-9. The Lady Tigers fell to 19-18 for the year.
Jaidyn Ivey opened the game with a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a bunt single from Crislyn Birge. After Birge swiped second, Taylor Adams brought Ivey and Birge to the plate with a two-run double. Addison Moseley also had an RBI double and drove home courtesy runner McKenzie Henderson. Bradleigh Lanier was then hit by a pitch and stole second. Jaycee Norton struck out Autumn Green, while Madi Wilson popped up for the second out. Ryan Lanier hit a two-run single and scored courtesy runner Jaelyn Myers and Lanier as Opp took a 5-0 lead.
Shelby Pettus and Adalyn Till had back-to-back two-out singles for Straughn in the bottom of the first, but Moseley induced a groundout and ended the inning.
The Lady Bobcats loaded the bases with singles from Rylie Kate Thrash, Birge, and Adams in the top of the second. Norton escaped the threat with a pair of pop-ups and began the home half with a single. McKena Bailey sacrificed Norton to second, but Moseley held the Lady Tigers scoreless with consecutive strikeouts and kept the score 5-0 after two innings.
Moseley and Norton settled into a rhythm as each pitcher posted three straight scoreless innings.
Lanier walked in the top of the sixth and scored on a bunt single by Birge. Thrash crossed the plate on an error before Adams drove home Birge with an RBI double and built the lead to 8-0 after six innings.
Gradyn Lunsford earned a one-out single in the top of the seventh, but Norton closed the frame with two strikeouts. Katelyn Ranta and Adelaide Dunn singled in the bottom of the inning as Lanier worked out of the jam unharmed.
Adams went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Opp, while Birge was also 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Moseley finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Moseley was credited with the win and gave up only four hits with five strikeouts in four innings. Lanier earned the save and allowed three hits with five strikeouts in three innings.
Dunn went 2-for-4 to lead Straughn at the plate. Norton allowed eight runs on 12 hits and struck out six in a complete-game effort.
