Local track athletes earn chance to compete at state

Covington County will be well represented from five different schools at the state championship track and field meet Thursday, May 1, through Saturday, May 3.
Florala, Pleasant Home, and Red Level will compete on Friday and Saturday in Class 1A-3A at Cullman High School. Opp and Straughn will compete on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in Class 4A at the Gulf Shores City Municipal Track.
Admission is $14 per day. Trophies will be awarded to the team winner and runner-up in each division. Medals will be awarded to the first three places in each event.
Florala state qualifiers are Riley Cato – 400 meter dash, Emery Wood – 800 meter run, Christina Sanders – javelin, Maggie Russell – javelin, the girls’ 4×400 meter relay team, Jaylen Bradberry – 200 meter dash, Markeith Thrash – 400 meter dash and 800 meter run, Dalton Devenney – 800 meter run, 1600 meter run, and 3200 meter run, Elijah McMeans – 110 meter hurdles, 300 meter hurdles, and high jump, Rayshon Coleman – high jump, long jump, and triple jump, Bradley Norman – long jump and javelin, Greyson West – triple jump, Julius Davis – shot put, Quincy Barbour – javelin, and the boys’ 4×100 meter relay team, boys’ 4×400 meter relay team, and boys’ 4×800 meter relay team.
Opp state qualifiers are Crystal Rogers – 100 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles, Le’Tasia Coleman – triple jump, Brooke Williams – javelin, the girls’ 4×100 meter relay team, Michael Williams – 110 meter hurdles, Damirian Thompson – high jump, and the boys’ 4×100 meter relay team.
Pleasant Home state qualifiers are Jenna Kate Clark – 800 meter run, Presley Kelley – pole vault and long jump, Kate Kelley – pole vault, Si’Naya Purifoy – javelin, Chloe Bush – javelin, the girls’ 4×800 meter relay, Chris Scott – 200 meter dash and pole vault, Jackson Hawkins – 400 meter dash, Hyram Josey – 800 meter run, John Isaac Hawkins – 800 meter run, Tyler Purifoy – 800 meter run and 300 meter hurdles, Nathaniel Hobbs – 1600 meter run, Elgin McMeans – 300 meter hurdles, Jacob Bryan – long jump and javelin, Alex Scott – triple jump, Brody Bryan – triple jump, the boys’ 4×100 meter relay team, the boys’ 4×400 meter relay team, and the boys’ 4×800 meter relay team.
Red Level state qualifiers are Miracle Wright – 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash, Kaylie Williams – 400 meter dash and 800 meter run, Camani Crittenden – 400 meter dash, Deion Walton – 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash, Luke Hodges – 1600 meter run, Caston Black – long jump and triple jump, Lamarion Crittenden – long jump and triple jump, Xavier Crain – discus, Ben Carroll – javelin, and the boys’ 4×100 meter relay team.
Straughn state qualifiers are Hannah Poston – 100 meter dash and 300 meter hurdles, Trinity Cator – 200 meter dash and 400 meter dash, Gabbi Poston – 400 meter dash, Kaitlyn Bybee – 800 meter run, 1600 meter run, and 3200 meter run, Faithe Eib – 800 meter run and 1600 meter run, Lillian Weeks – 100 meter hurdles, Breonna Robbins – high jump, Lexie Duffell – triple jump, Emma Eaton – shot put, Chloe Anderson – javelin, the girls’ 4×400 meter relay team, Avery Smith – shot put and discus, Ean Robbins, shot put, and Carter Straughn – javelin.
All five schools competed in the AHSAA 1A-4A Sectional Meet at the Covington County Schools Track Facility last week.
In Class 1A boys, Florala won the sectional with a team score of 161. Pleasant Home finished in second place with 134 points, and Red Level was third with 74 points. In Class 1A girls, Florala earned second place with 88 points, and Pleasant Home followed in third place with 62 points. Red Level took sixth place with 39 points.
In Class 4A boys, Straughn was seventh place with 31 points, and Opp earned ninth place with 29 points. In Class 4A girls, Straughn won the sectional with a team score of 121. Opp was tenth place with 31 points.
