The Covington County Guilters’ Guild recently presented two local Vietnam veterans with a Quilt of Valor. The quilts were completed and presented at the request of the Covington Veterans Foundation to honor veterans and raise awareness of the 50th anniversary of the end of the war. Mary Vines coordinated the effort.
The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. To use the term Quilt of Valor, Quilts of Valor or QOV, the quilt must be a specific size, must have a label with required information, it must be awarded (it is not a gift) and it must be recorded.
Capt. Belinda Marvin was assigned to a chemical unit while serving with the 562nd engineers in Southeast Asia, but her most grim duty came when she had to escort the body of her brother, William Washington Jr., home.
Mark King was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam. After being severely injured when his helicopter was hit by enemy fire and crash landed, he became a flight instructor at Ft. Rucker.
