GALLERY: Five county softball teams advance to South Regional

The Andalusia, Florala, Opp, Red Level, and Straughn softball teams will travel to Gulf Shores for the AHSAA South Regional next week.

Andalusia, Florala, Opp, Red Level, and Straughn have advanced past the area tournament round and will represent Covington County at the South Regional from May 5-8 at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.
The winner and runner-up from each of four areas in 1A-6A will be placed in a pre-drawn, eight-team bracket for a double-elimination qualifying regional in each class. Each area winner will be the “home team” in the first round. A coin flip will determine the “home team” in all other rounds.
Admission is $12 per day, which includes facility and processing fees.
5A Area 3 champion Andalusia (29-8) will begin the 5A South Regional with Area 1 runner-up UMS-Wright (11-6) on Monday, May 5, at 10:45 a.m. on Field 3. Led by head coach Ray Bozeman, the Lady Bulldogs defeated Charles Henderson in the area championship.
1A Area 2 runner-up Florala (16-8) will begin the 1A South Regional with Area 4 winner Sweet Water (15-12) on Wednesday, May 7, at 9 a.m. on Field 5. Led by head coach Anna Harrelson, the Lady Wildcats fell to Kinston in the area championship.
4A Area 4 champion Opp (31-9) will begin the 4A South Regional with Area 2 runner-up W.S. Neal (15-17) on Tuesday, May 6, at 9 a.m. on Field 6. Led by head coach David McVay, the Lady Bobcats defeated Straughn in the area championship.
1A Area 3 runner-up Red Level (16-12) will begin the 1A South Regional with Area 1 winner Leroy (18-8) on Wednesday, May 7, at 9 a.m. on Field 2. Led by head coach Eric Schwartz, the Lady Tigers fell to Brantley in the area championship.
4A Area 4 runner-up Straughn (19-18) will begin the 4A South Regional with Area 2 winner Jackson (27-7) on Tuesday, May 6, at 9 a.m. on Field 4. Led by head coach Candace Tucker, the Lady Tigers fell to Opp in the area championship.
No champion will be determined in the qualifying regional. The team that remains undefeated in the winner’s bracket with three consecutive wins will qualify as the top seed for the state tournament. The team that wins the loser’s bracket will qualify as the second seed for the state tournament.

The state tournament will be held May 12-16 at Choccolocco Park in Oxford.
