Five members of Andalusia Isshinryu Karate recently traveled to Crossville, Tennessee, to compete in the Middle Tennessee Isshinryu Open Karate Games.

The tourney was hosted by the Lebanon Dojo of Lebanon, Tennessee, with instructors Tony Williams and Sandra Strong.

It was a great day of strong competition, and when the dust settled, Andalusia competitors finished as follows:

  • Johnathan Rudd was first place in youth black belt kumite, first place in men’s first and second degree kata, and first place in Men’s first and second degree weapons. There were no black belts in his weapons and kata divisions, so he competed in the men’s division.
  • Lacey Rudd was first place in 9 and 10-year intermediate kata.
  • Eli Rudd was first place in 7 and 8-year intermediate kata.
  • CJ Lucca was second place in 6 and under kata and second place in kumite.
  • Craig Lucca was third place in men’s beginning kata and third place in men’s beginning kumite.

The 25th Annual South Alabama Karate Open Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, June 14 at Straughn High School Gym. Teams from all over the southeastern United States are scheduled to compete. Last year’s tourney drew 21 karate schools from a five state area.
