The Pilot Club of Andalusia announced Mary Claire Thomasson as its 2024-2025 Pilot of the Year recipient during a monthly meeting held at the Blue Bird Coffee Company on Monday, May 19.

The Pilot of the Year is an award that is voted on by the club for outstanding service throughout the year.

“When my name was called, I was absolutely shocked. I have been a Pilot since we moved back to Andalusia and am so glad I did. Thank you all so much,” Thomasson said.

Mary Claire was previously named the Pilot of the Year in 1984 before she moved away from Andalusia. She has been with the non-profit organization for a total of 17 years and was presented with a necklace that had an inscription reading Pilot of the Year at the meeting.

“I have met some great women in this organization. Some were back in the 80s and 90s when I was first in the club,” she said.

Her fellow members praised her for the work she has done in the last year.

“Mary Claire’s dedication to the club and its mission is evident in everything she does. She selflessly stepped up to fill the important role of treasurer, where she has done an outstanding job managing our finances with integrity and care,” they said.

Additional members said that Mary Claire is an active and enthusiastic member of the BRAINO committee and also helps organize and deliver pick-me-ups.

“She works closely with Angie Kelley and others to bring fun and connection to local nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and adult activity centers. Her compassion and cheerful presence have brought joy to many. Mary Claire brightens the days of caregivers and community members with pick-me-ups, which shows her commitment to serving others in both big and small ways,” they said.

Mary Claire participates in the BrainMinders puppet program that visits local schools to educate children about brain safety. According to additional Pilots, her role with BrainMinders is “an initiative that truly reflects her heart for community education and prevention.”

“She is always willing to lend a hand, offer encouragement, and step in wherever she is needed. Her positive attitude and tireless efforts make her not just a valued member of the club but also an inspiration to us all,” they said.

The Pilot Club of Andalusia’s primary focus is to promote awareness of brain-related disorders and help with local charities. Meetings are held on the fourth Monday of every month at the Andalusia Area Chamber of Commerce beginning at 5:30 p.m.

“The Pilot Club is a great organization and helps people with brain trauma all over the United States. I love being a Pilot,” Thomasson said.
