In a heartfelt initiative to foster literacy and community engagement, the Old Three Notch Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has placed four “Little Libraries” throughout the local area. The project, part of the national DAR’s commitment to education and historic preservation, aims to provide free, easy access to books for readers of all ages.

The small, house-shaped libraries were installed in strategic locations around Covington County, near parks and neighborhood gathering spots. Each one operates on a “take a book, leave a book, share a book” honor system, encouraging residents to exchange books and inspire a love of reading.

The locations are the Three Notch Museum in Andalusia, the Covington County High School Track and Field Facility on Hwy. 55, Town Hall of Gantt in Gantt, and Fairmont Baptist Church in Red Level.

“Our goal is to support literacy, especially among children and families, while also strengthening our sense of community,” said Chapter Librarian Linda Castleberry, who led the project. “These Little Libraries are more than just book boxes – they are symbols of our dedication to education, service, and the joy of sharing knowledge.”

Bookshelves are stocked with a diverse collection, including children’s stories, novels, nonfiction works, and even history books—many donated by DAR members and local supporters.

The Old Three Notch Chapter invites the public to visit the libraries, contribute gently used books, and become a part of the growing literacy movement.

“Literacy is freedom,” Castleberry added. “With these Little Libraries, we hope to spark a lifelong love of reading across generations.”
