Babbie off-duty firefighter rescues homeowner
On Friday, June 6, at approximately 10:07 p.m., Covington County 911 dispatched the Opp and Onycha Fire Departments to 17197 Maggie Road for a residential structure fire with possible entrapment.
As fire units were en route, they learned that an off-duty firefighter from another department had already rescued the homeowner. The firefighter extricated her through a bedroom window, and she was safely removed from the home.
Upon arrival, fire crews found moderate smoke coming from the exterior and extending to the front door. The fire was quickly brought under control and confined to a single room, though other areas of the home suffered smoke and heat damage.
Thanks to the heroic actions of firefighter Brad Lowe with the Babbie Volunteer Fire Department, the homeowner was safely rescued, and the fire was contained.
Haynes Ambulance paramedics treated the homeowner on the scene, and she was later released. The Covington County Sheriff’s Department also responded to the incident.
