Mr. Sammy Frank Brown, 89, of Andalusia, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2025, at Andalusia Hospital.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 18, 11 a.m., at Oakey Ridge Baptist Church with Brother Shaun Bentley and Brother Eugene Meadows officiating and Foreman Funeral Home directing. A time of visitation was held on Tuesday, June 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Foreman Funeral Home and also at the church beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Special music was by Johnny Stewart and Dawn Dozier who played the piano.
Born and raised in Pike County, Alabama, to a farming family began his love for agriculture. After serving in the U.S. Army, Sammy’s work in agriculture brought him to Andalusia in 1962, establishing a lifelong career at Anderson’s Peanuts, even helping to develop a hybrid peanut seed. One of his favorite things to do was to drive his pickup and to check out the local crops. He took great pride in doing things the right way.
While his work was a priority, Sammy was a man of many hobbies. For over four decades, he played cards on Monday nights with the same group of friends. He loved taking care of his hunting dogs and to quail hunt, converting his farm to a quail preserve for many years. Sammy managed the men’s Coop softball team, playing into the wee hours many a weekend. He and Bobbie enjoyed traveling far and wide from Hawaii to Puerto Rico experiencing new places.
In his later years, he discovered the joy of grandchildren, traveling to cheer on their sporting events and other endeavors. Rook and dominoes satisfied his competitive spirit. Most afternoons were spent following the Braves, and fall weekends meant Auburn football. He also found great joy helping with the youth at Oakey Ridge.
Sammy leaves behind a legacy of hard work, loyalty, and love for the land, his family, and his community. As he said before his passing, “I have lived a wonderful life.” He did indeed.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Veasey Brown; two daughters and son-in-law, Lynn Lamere of Miramar Beach, Florida, and Lee and Alan Watkins of Smyrna, Georgia; grandchildren, Sam Lamere Gutter, Raeann Lamere Kain, Maddie Lamere Sand, Alexander Brown Watkins, Turner Allen Watkins; great grandchildren, Sophie Louise Gutter, James Francis Gutter, Noah Joshua Kain, and Peter Clement Kain; two stepsons, Kelly and Lisa Veasey and Keith Veasey; one brother, John Brown; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Bobbie Coston Brown, his brother, Claude Brown, and sisters Betty Duffee and Mildred Burleson.
