The Andalusia Fire Department recently received a patriotic surprise from the Old Three Notch Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR). As part of the chapter’s “Star-Spangled Surprise” initiative, firefighters were “starred” with a vibrant display of red, white, and blue, honoring their dedicated service to the community.

The “Star-Spangled Surprise” is a seasonal project by the Old Three Notch Chapter that brings patriotic spirit to the community through themed decorations and displays. Running from Memorial Day through Independence Day, the initiative allows residents to sponsor a surprise patriotic display for a friend, neighbor, organization—or even themselves—for a $25 donation.

“This is our way of showing appreciation to those who serve our community with courage and commitment,” said Chapter Regent, Carol Ann Mullins. “The Andalusia Fire Department embodies the values of patriotism, protection, and public service, making them a perfect recipient for this honor.”

This “star” distinction is part of a broader DAR initiative—similar to their “Freedom Hydrants” program—designed to acknowledge organizations and groups that embody the spirit of patriotism and civic service.

The fire station’s lawn was decorated with American flags, festive stars, and banners, catching the attention of passersby and bringing smiles to department’s firefighters.

In addition to spreading patriotic cheer, the Star-Spangled Surprise project helps raise funds to support local community efforts and DAR programs in education, historic preservation, and veteran outreach. The Old Three Notch Chapter has extended the campaign this year, giving residents more opportunities to honor local heroes and beautify neighborhoods with American pride.
