Jermaine Woods, a longtime resident, entrepreneur, and community leader, has officially announced his candidacy for City Council representing Dist. 1.
Woods, who owns a local trucking business, says his campaign is rooted in a desire to bring more transparency, accessibility, and progress to city government.
“District 1 is my home. It’s where I built my business, raised my family, and connected with neighbors who care deeply about our community,” Woods said. “I’m running to ensure every resident has a voice, and to help shape a future where no one is left behind.”
His campaign platform includes improving infrastructure, enhancing public safety, expanding youth programs, investing in economic development, and supporting small businesses. But Woods says the foundation of his candidacy is something simpler: listening.
“There are too many people asking, ‘Why has leadership stopped listening?’ ‘Why are there no open Town Hall meetings?’” he said. “Instead of asking ‘Why,’ I’m asking ‘Why not?’ Why not hold regular forums where the community helps shape the policies that affect them? Why not invest in the services we know matter most — schools, jobs, safety, and housing?”
Woods shared that his dream of running for public office was encouraged by his father, Dr. Woods. “When I told him I wanted to run, his response was simple: ‘I will support you.’ That moment still drives me today,” he said.
In addition to his business background, Woods is known for his community involvement and hands-on approach to leadership. He promises to bring that same commitment to City Hall if elected.
“I don’t claim to have every answer,” he said. “But I have a vision — one built on unity, trust, and action. I’m asking for a chance to prove my commitment not with words, but with work.”
Woods is asking Dist. 1 residents to join him in choosing a new path forward.
“This election is about possibility, about progress, and about doing things differently — together. Why not now? I humbly request your vote and support on Tuesday, August 26. Thank you and God bless,” Woods said.
