Andalusia Animal Clinic has welcomed a new member to its team with Dr. Sydney Singletary, a small animal veterinarian with a passion for emergency medicine.

A native of Cottonwood, Alabama, Singletary first connected with the clinic during a preceptorship in 2024. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from Troy University, graduating magna cum laude, and competed as a member of Troy’s track and field team, specializing in the 400-meter hurdles. She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Auburn University this spring and graduated cum laude.

“I always felt called to help animals,” Singletary said. “At one point, I considered a career in medicine with a focus on orthopedics or physical therapy, but I kept coming back to animals. My first veterinary internship didn’t immediately win me over, but when I returned later and connected with the team, everything just clicked. That’s when I knew this was the right path.”

Singletary’s journey to Andalusia Animal Clinic began with a recommendation from a mutual friend who suggested she reach out to Dr. Toby Atkinson.

“I visited for just one day and was struck by how kind and welcoming everyone was. I followed up with a two-week externship and fell in love with the clinic and its people,” she said.

Her areas of professional interest include emergency medicine, dermatology, and surgery.

“My dog has chronic skin issues, and he became my first real dermatology case. Through managing his condition, I saw how different treatments affect pets, especially when it comes to skin barrier health. I found myself really drawn to the field,” Singletary said.

Before joining AAC, Singletary gained experience at Troy Animal Clinic and Steel City Emergency Vets in Hoover near Birmingham. She also completed a clinical preceptorship at Bradfordville Animal Hospital in Tallahassee, Florida.

“I love the challenge of veterinary medicine. Animals can’t tell you what’s wrong, so it’s like solving a puzzle, and I enjoy that. I also appreciate the creativity that comes with rural medicine. Even without high-tech tools, you can still make a difference,” she said.

Singletary expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside Dr. Jordan Smith and the clinic’s team.

“I’m thankful to be part of such a dedicated group. Everyone here truly cares and goes the extra mile. Even after hours, we show up for the animals, and that level of commitment is rare,” she said.

She hopes her time at AAC will allow her to further develop her diagnostic and treatment skills.

“There’s so much knowledge here between Dr. Toby and Dr. Jordan. I’m excited to learn from them and gain a lot of experience,” Singletary said.

While she won’t be introducing new services, Singletary will bring a fresh perspective and training in modern veterinary techniques.

“I’m not here to make big changes or add anything new, but I am excited to share the latest medications and approaches I’ve learned. I’m especially passionate about emergency cases,” she said.

Singletary also emphasized the importance of those who have helped her reach this point.

“My family, friends, and coworkers help me through tough days. Having people in your corner makes all the difference. I’ll always be grateful to them,” she said.

She looks forward to getting to know the Andalusia community and building relationships with local pet owners.

“I’ll be meeting people at the clinic, church, or even around town. I’m looking forward to getting to know the pets and their people,” she said.

At home, she enjoys life with her black and tan coonhound, Bear, and two cats, Opie and Sparrow. In her spare time, Singletary enjoys running, hiking, spending time with loved ones, and relaxing with her pets.

“I ran competitively in college and now enjoy half marathons. I haven’t done a full marathon yet, but I’m planning to run the one here in Andalusia this Christmas. It’s a great way to relieve stress,” Singletary said.

Singletary is the daughter of Ritchie and Decca Singletary with three siblings: Kyle, Skye, and Seth. She is engaged to her fiancé, Nash Rutledge.

“We are so excited to have Dr. Sydney and Nash here in Andalusia. She will be a great addition to our team at AAC,” Dr. Jordan Smith said.
