Opp’s 8U Cal Ripken finishes as state runner-up

The Opp 8U Baseball All-Stars put together a strong run at the Cal Ripken 8U State Tournament in Fairhope and finished as state runners-up after winning four games.
Opp opened the tournament with an impressive offensive display, collecting 21 hits in a dominant 12-2 pool play win over host Fairhope on Friday, June 27.
Jackson Nawlin and Rhett Scarbrough led the way with three hits each. Collin Schultz, Braylon Brantley, Carson Barrios, Russell Lane Mitchell, Jaxon Prescott, and Jax Hall also turned in multi-hit performances with two hits apiece. Mitchell allowed two runs on seven hits over four innings on the mound, while Maddox Perry tossed a scoreless inning in relief.
The Bobcats kept their bats hot in the next pool play game, racking up 26 hits in an 8-7 walk-off victory over Daphne on Friday.
Schultz and Scarbrough each recorded four hits. Nawlin, Marshall Salter, and Daxton Edgar added three hits apiece, and Mitchell and Clive Presley chipped in with two hits each. Mitchell gave up three runs on eight hits in four innings. After Daphne tied the game at 7-7 in the top of the sixth, Scarbrough delivered the game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the seventh and drove in Schultz.
Bracket play began Saturday, June 28, with Opp putting up seven runs in the first inning en route to a 16-1 win over Decatur North. The team finished with 15 hits, led by two-hit performances from Schultz, Nawlin, Perry, Prescott, and Edgar. Perry surrendered just one run on seven hits in three innings of work.
Opp carried its momentum into the semifinals with a 10-0 shutout of Lineville on Saturday. The Bobcats jumped out to an early six-run lead in the first inning. Scarbrough, Barrios, Prescott, Salter, and Hall each collected two hits in the win. Mitchell pitched four scoreless innings, allowing seven hits. Bryson Ellison sealed the victory with an RBI single, scoring Hall for the walk-off win.
Opp’s tournament run ended in the championship game with a 7-2 loss to Daphne on Sunday, June 29.
Brantley, Scarbrough, Barrios, Mitchell, Salter, Edgar, and Ellison all notched two hits in the loss. Mitchell pitched all six innings for the Bobcats.
Opp will next advance to the Southwest Regional Tournament in Monroe, Louisiana, scheduled from July 16-20.
