Fundraiser to serve up soul food

A Black History event set for River Falls is designed to merge the past with the present and season it with soul. Food, that is.

A Taste of Black History is planned for Sat., Feb. 13, in the River Falls Community Center.

Organizer Mattie Freeney said the event will be similar to the annual taste event held in Andalusia by the Oleander Club for many years. The menu includes chicken and dumplings, collards, black-eyed peas, lima beans, fried chicken, chitlins, pig’s feet, cracklin’ bread, baked sweet potatoes, cakes and cookies.

Like many other events held there, the event is a fundraiser for the facility, which was once a school. A sing-along and videos of previous performances there also are planned.

Proceeds will be used for the maintenance and renovations of the River Falls Community Center, which is located at 9710 Gantt Road in River Falls.

Tickets are $10 for ages 13 and up, and $5 for ages 5 to 12. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m.

For information, call 582-1104 or 222-6344.
