Police are investigating the “who and how” behind the theft of nearly 7,000 gallons of diesel fuel totaling an estimated $120,000 from area convenience stores in the last six months.

The thefts occurred at Gitty-Up-N-Go stores in Andalusia and McKenzie when drivers of at least three diesel trucks would pull up to the pumps after hours and use a “dummy card device” to get the gasoline.

Thus far, truckers have stolen 6,500 gallons from an Andalusia store and more than 300 from the McKenzie store.

“This is one of the more brazen crimes I’ve seen,” said Covington County Chief Deputy David Anderson.

Anderson said it appears the truckers are using a dummy card to get their fuel free of charge well after midnight. Video surveillance footage has provided few clues, but investigators continue to work various leads. Signs have been put up asking for the public’s help, and measures are now in place at the stores to stop this kind of theft.
