Andy BOE waiting to adopt 2013-14 calendar

The Andalusia City Board is expected to approve a 2013-14 calendar at its April 15 board meeting.

Superintendent Ted Watson said he’s waiting to see if the state legislature relaxes school calendar rules that went into effect in the current school year, stating that schools could not convene more than 10 days before Labor Day and must dismiss before Memorial Day.

It was a plan supported by state tourism officials, who said longer summers for kids meant more vacations for parents.

But the plan’s time constraints limited the number of holidays students could have during the school year, and shortened the Christmas break.

A bill before the legislature would relax some of those rules, giving local systems more leeway.

“As it stands now, we’d be starting school on Aug. 19,” Watson said.
