A man was air lifted Tuesday after falling an estimated 14 feet while working on the Yellow River Bridge in Babbie.

Emergency personnel rushed to the scene on U.S. Hwy. 84 just after 10 a.m. to find the man in the streambed and suffering from extensive leg injuries. His identity was not made available, but sources say he is a contract worker, not an Alabama Department of Transportation employee.

It took a group of nearly 10 men – including those from Opportunity EMS, Opp and Babbie fire departments, the Covington County Sheriff’s Office and the Opp Police Department – to hoist the man to safety using a rope and a basket stretcher.

The man was then air lifted to Sacred Heart Hospital’s trauma unit in Pensacola, Fla., for treatment.
