Despite social media scuttlebutt about his “impending retirement,” Andalusia Police Chief Wilbur Williams said Friday that he’s not ready to turn in his badge and gun.

Earlier this week, a discussion began on Facebook, asking public preference on what qualifications a new police chief should possess. It stated that Williams had publicly announced his intention to retire; however, Williams said Friday he isn’t ready to give anyone a chance to fill the post.

“When I came here (from Mobile), I only promised (to stay) for 10 years,” he said. “I know that 10 years was up three years ago. I’ve jokingly said that my job status is day-to-day, but, no, I’ve not said I’m retiring.”

Williams said he wanted to assure the community there is “no secret date” for a retirement either.

“I want residents to know that as long as the mayor is happy with me, I’m happy being here,” he said.

Williams said he wasn’t sure of the rumor’s source.

“I’d love for this person to come and sit down across from me and tell me where that information came from,” he said.
