Opp, Elba to battle

Opp’s going to have its hands full tonight as the Bobcats face Elba for their season opener at Tigers Stadium.

The Bobcats are coming off of a 28-21 preseason win over Dale County last week. OHS held a 20-0 lead at one point during the game.

OHS head coach Jack Whigham said Elba’s got a talented bunch.

“I saw them play in the spring, and they’ve improved tremendously since then,” Whigham said.

Elba has Darrean Burks, a senior running back to fill the void of a lack of numbers for the Tigers this season.

“That Burks kid is outstanding,” Whigham said.

New Elba coach Ed Rigby, who came over from Goshen last year, is playing his son, Ramsey, at quarterback.

The Tigers finished their 2012 campaign 6-5.

Defensively for the Tigers, there is Cobe Goosby and Rajah Caldwell at linebacker.

“They’re just a very talented team,” the Opp coach said. “We’re going to have our hands loaded.”

Whigham said the players are going to be in a lot better conditioning shape this week and are looking forward to the season.

“We’ve been outside everyday. That’s giong to help us,” he said. “We’re looking forward to getting the season started. It’s a tough non-region team and a tough next three weeks for us in Elba, T.R. Miller and Bayside Academy. We’ve got to get with it and be better, and hopefully we’ll start off with a win (tonight).”

Kick off is at 7 p.m. in Elba.
