Opp welcomes new retailers

Opp appears to be on a small business roll, Chamber of Commerce officials said Thursday.

The trend became apparent after members gathered at Opp’s newest business, Opp Gun Shop, for a ribbon cutting, said Emilee Gage of the Opp Chamber.

“Judging from the number of ribbon cuttings that the chamber has sponsored, I would definitely say things are on a roll,” Gage said.

In June, the chamber welcomed Occassionally Yours, a photography studio; Hometown Pet Shop in July, and in August, Rockstar Nail Salon.

“September looks like it’s going to be a great month, with the welcoming for Opp Gun Shop (Thursday),” she said. “We have new member, Spoiled Bratz Family Hair Salon, which is our newest member. Also, The Corner Mall has a new owner, and Just Stuff, which is an antique store near IGA, has opened a second location next to the Grocery Outlet.”

Gage said she had a one-word description of the surge in new businesses.

“The one word I can think of is ‘impressive,’” She said. “New businesses are coming in, and even though they’re small businesses, we are thrilled they’ve chosen Opp as their new home. We still want to see a big industry, but we are always welcoming to anyone who wants to call Opp home.”

Gage said she believes merchants choose Opp because of its hometown atmosphere.

In addition to the recent ribbon cuttings, city hall officials said they’ve also issued business licenses this month to Copper Steel and Over a Barrel Wine and Hobby Shop.
