GREENVILLE — Straughn’s termites came up just a little short on Saturday, falling 12-7 to Greenville in the Tri-County Super Bowl Championship at the YMCA’s football field.

Greenville drew first blood with 4:09 left in the second quarter, and took the 6-0 lead into halftime.

Late in the fourth quarter, the local Tigers gave up a fumble and Greenville ran it back 18 yards for a touchdown with 3:31 left to play to take a 12-0 lead.

However, Straughn wasn’t about to give up just yet.

Straughn’s Jake Wilson connected with Logan Olhava for a 20-yard TD pass with 7.4 seconds left to cut the lead to 12-7 with the successful extra point, which Wilson threw to Mason Turner.

“I’m proud of these boys for how hard they worked,” Straughn termites coach Richard Hammett said. “They’ve worked hard all year long. There was nothing that we’ve thrown to these 9 and 10-year-olds that they couldn’t do. I really appreciate all of the parents and all of the support. Each and every one of them gave their hearts.”

This year’s run was the farthest that Straughn has been in about four to five years.

“We just came up a little short,” Hammett said.

The Tigers finished their season 7-2.
