There’s a new gymnastics team in town.

The Company Performance Center of Andalusia recently held tryouts for the center’s first-ever competitive gymnastics team, which is slated to start competition in August.

Team coaches Kimberly Morgan and Tona Headrick, with more than a combined 25 years of experience, will be instructing the newly-formed group that was spawned from the center’s Hotshot program.

“Most of the gyms, if not all of the gymnastics facilities, have a gymnastics team,” Morgan said.

Tryouts for the competitive gymnastics team were held in December, and those who made the team started training for the season.

Morgan said the team will be competing in the USA Gymnastics format, and with other teams from Enterprise and Crestview, Fla. Events include vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise.

“The same thing you see in the Olympics,” the coach said.

Morgan said this venture is “exciting” for the center and that the idea to have a competitive team came through a gradual process.

“When I came here, the studio had one tumbling class,” Morgan said. “ took over the tumbling class and tried to build the tumbling progam up big.

“I put the idea in (for the gymnastics team) and said hey, let’s try it,” she said. “We got a balance beam and that took off.”

Morgan said Headrick’s arrival to Andalusia from Chattanooga, Tenn., came at a good time and with her experience in the art, the was no doubt there would be a team here.

Members of the new gymnastics team are Kaylin Fite, Georgia Dean, Kelsey Kelley, Hailey Colvin, Joanna Cleland, Emilee Faith Bush and Gracy Jackson.

Additionally, the new Hotshot group will be announced in February. Gymnastics classes are for children children ages 2-18, and those who are interested can enroll year-round.
