Trot registration slow at moment, to pick up

Registration for the 2014 Alligator Trot 5K Road Race and Walk on June 21 in Florala has been a little slow this year, race director Karen Johnson said.

The Alligator Trot, which is held in conjunction with the 144th Masonic Celebration, is the noel race running in two states.

As of Thursday, there have only been 41 — 27 runners and 14 walkers — to register for the race so far, Johnson said.

“I know it will pick up next week,” she said. “Last year at this time, I had more than 100 registered.”

While the registration so far has seen grim number totals, Johnson said there are runners and walkers represented from seven states — Illinois, Indiana, Mississippi, West Virginia, North Carolina, Florida and Alabama.

Johnson said that she hopes for a big crowd because she’ll have a “few surprises” on the route this year.

The course is asphalt and USATF certified. Cost to run or walk in the race is $25. To get a T-shirt for the race, preregistration is required.

Applications can be printed off at www.alligatortrot.com, or email an application request to alligatortrot@yahoo.com.

Online registration can be found at www.active.com.

The race begins at 8 a.m. with race-day packet pick up lasting from 6:30-7:45 a.m.
