Four local cowboys and two local cowgirls will be hitting the road to compete at the 2014 National High School Rodeo Association Finals in Rocky Springs, Wyo., after each qualified in the top four of their respective events at the Alabama state finals today.

Florala’s Chase Hargrove will compete in bareback riding; Andalusia’s Gus Maraman will compete in tie down; Straughn’s Jordan Whitman and Dustin Hyson will compete in team roping; Casey Cox of Red Level will compete in shooting; and Sparta’s Bailey O’Ferrell will compete in pole bending, goat tying, barrel racing and cutting at nationals, which will be held July 13-19.

Kinston’s Lukas Taylor and Pleasant Home’s Hanna Seymour qualified for nationals, but opted not to go.

Because another participant chose not to go and she finished sixth in shooting, Cox was able to grab a ticket to the big show.

The top four in each event qualify for nationals, but have the choice to go or not to go.

At the awards ceremony after the rodeo had ended, O’Ferrell picked up the reserve champion All-Around Cowgirl award with 832 points; and Hyson won the Rookie All-Around Cowboy award with 168 points.

Taylor came in third place in the All-Around Cowboy division with 611 points.
