Local All-Star teams lose at state

Things didn’t go so well for the three local 14-year-old Babe Ruth All-Star baseball teams this weekend in the state tournament at Andalusia High School.

Covington County fell 29-7 to Wetumpka, and 15-5 to Mathews Park; and Andalusia lost 11-5 to Mathews Park on Sunday. On Saturday, Monroe County beat Opp 10-0, and Wetumpka beat Andalusia, 11-1.

Last night, Opp, CC and Andalusia played in action at AHS, and games weren’t complete when The Star-News went to press.

Wetumpka 29, Covington County 7

Wetumpka added 12 runs in the fifth inning to make it a big rout.

Parker Grooms hit a double for CC.

Mathews Park 11, Andalusia 5

Brennan Strong and Will Clark went 2-for-4 to lead Andalusia; and Garrett Davis went 1-for-2.

Mathews Park 15, Covington County 5

Justin Peeples and Josh Ruth went 1-for-2 each; Aaron Warthen went 1-for-3; and Cale Mancil went 1-for-1 to lead Covington County.

Mathews Park scored one run in the first inning; six runs in the sixth; three runs in the third; and five runs in the fourth.

Covington County scored one run each in the first and third; two runs in the fourth; and one run in the fifth.

Saturday’s Pool Play

Wetumpka 11, Andalusia 1

Wetumpka scored six runs in the second inning and four runs in the fourth.

Grant Holley, Strong and Davis had one hit each.
