Fire destroys Opp home; firefighters overcome by heat

An Opp family is without their home today after an afternoon fire yielded heavy damage, Opp Police Chief Corey Spurlin said.

Opp Fire Department was called to 1803 U.S. Hwy. 84 West, also known as West Cumming Avenue, around 3:25 p.m.

“When we arrived on scene, heavy fire was visible,” Spurlin said. “There is significant heat and fire damage. It was contained to the overhead and the front room The rest of the house has heat and water damage.”

Spurlin said five people were at home when the fire broke out, but all got out safely.

Additionally, two firefighters were taken to Mizell Memorial Hospital for heat exhaustion – one from OFD and the other from Onycha.

Spurlin said as of press time, one firefighter had been released and the other was still being treated.
