Walter Carl Griggs

Mr. Walter Carl Griggs, 61, of Andalusia, passed away Mon., Nov. 3, 2014, at Andalusia Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wed., Nov. 5, at Foreman Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dean Stanley officiating. Interment will be at New Home Cemetery. Visitation will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Foreman Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife, Erline Griggs of Andalusia; his sons, Clarence (Kaytreen) Ziglar of Andalusia, Michael (Tracy Parsons) Hall of Red Level, Walter Chris Griggs, and Clarence Austin Griggs of Andalusia; a daughter, Connie (Roger Cooper) Griggs of Andalusia; 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, his brothers, Vance Griggs and Truman (Sue) Griggs of Andalusia; and two sisters, Evelyn (Jerry) Hallford and Charlotte (Allen) Harrison of Andalusia.

Pallbearers will be Arron Lee, Clay Ziglar, David Cooper, David Earl Griggs, Glen Gunter, Preston Weaver, and Glenn Weaver.

Hilary H. Mathews

Mr. Hilary H. Mathews, Jr., of Rose Hill, passed away Mon., Nov. 3, 2014, at Mizell Memorial Hospital in Opp.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wed., Nov. 5, at Rose Hill Church of Christ with Minister C. H. McCrory officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at noon at Rose Hill Church of Christ.

He is survived by his daughters, Jyneese Mathews of Andalusia and Hilda Sue Philyaw of Birmingham; his sons, Hilary H. Mathews, III and Emmit Daniel Mathews of Rose Hill; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Hudson Mathews, and daughter, Sheila Diane Gunter.

Pallbearers will be Bobo Mathews, Jason Pinckard, Adam Pinkard, Derrick Philyaw, Kaleb Pinckard, and Coston Pinckard.

Margaret Adele Smyly

Margaret Adele Williams Smyly, age 88, of Andalusia, died Nov. 2, 2014.

The daughter of Franklin Horatio Williams, Sr., and Lessie Bell Williams, Margaret was born in Birmingham, Ala., and lived her young years in the Geneva – Hartford, Ala., area, her young adult years in Crestview, Fla., and the rest of her life in Andalusia.

A graduate of Geneva High School, Margaret worked with her father in the photography business during World War II, photographing troops at Fort Rucker and in Crestview. She later had a long career as a secretary at the Alatex in Crestview and then in Andalusia.

Margaret was a member of the First Baptist Church of Andalusia and was active in many church and community groups and organizations, including the Glory Singers, the Inter Se Club, Sav-A-Life, the Andalusia Historical Society, and the Red Cross.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Allen Smyly, Sr.; her son, William Allen Smyly, Jr.; brothers, Aubrey Williams and Mitchell Williams; and sisters, Lorene Crutchfield and Sybil Baxter.

Mrs. Smyly is survived by her son, Richard Carlton Smyly; and daughters-in-law, Celia Roland Smyly, and Kathleen Akin Smyly Parsons. She is also survived by her grandchildren, William Allen Smyly, III (wife Melanie), Stephen Loftin Smyly (wife Melissa), Sara Marie Smyly, Marie Margaret Smyly, Robert Allen Smyly, and Franklin Aubrey Smyly; and great-grandchildren, William Allen Smyly IV, Emily Anne Trebus, and Jacob Thomas Trebus. Surviving siblings are Sarah Clark and Franklin H. Williams, Jr. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom she loved.

The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. on Fri., Nov. 7, at 11:30 a.m. at the Foreman Funeral Home Chapel in Andalusia. The family will receive friends before the service, starting at 10. A graveside service will follow at Andalusia Memorial Cemetery.

The family suggests that any memorials be given in Mrs. Smyly’s memory to the First Baptist Church of Andalusia; the Andalusia Area Humane Society, Inc.; or to the charity of your choice.

 

LanA Sue Tyson Rose

Mrs. Lana Sue Tyson Rose, 73, of Montgomery, formerly of Andalusia, passed away, Fri., Oct. 31, 2014, at her residence.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thurs., Nov. 6, at Andalusia Memorial Cemetery with Dr. Fred Karthaus officiating and Foreman Funeral Home directing. Visitation with the family will be at the graveside.

She is survived by her cousins, Doug and Vickie Croft of Opp, Jamie Croft of Auburn, Tyson Croft of Tampa, Fla., and Bailey Croft of Opp; and several other extended family members.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Tony Warner; her parents, Robert “Doc” Tyson and Nell Tyson; and her brother, Bob Tyson.
