Local Vietnam Veterans will be honored on March 29 with a welcome home barbecue, officials said earlier this week.

James Clifton of AMVETS 23 said the barbecue will coincide with Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day and will be held at Frank Jackson State Park at 1 p.m.

“It is for all Vietnam veterans and their families,” he said. “We just ask if you’re not a member of AMVETS that you call us.”

Clifton said hamburgers, hot dogs and Pepsi products will be provided.

Those who attend are asked to bring a side dish.

Clifton asked that all veterans who attend bring a copy of their DD 214.

“This is so we have no stolen valor,” he said.

Since Vietnam veterans weren’t welcomed home, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution in 2011 to help provide these veterans with the chance for a proper welcome.

The Senate recognized the final withdrawal date of combat and combat-support troops from Vietnam.
