CATHERINE G. EDMONDS

Catherine G. Edmonds, affectionately known as “Miss Cat,” was born on Jan. 5, 1935, to the late Cleve and Pauline Griffin in Butler County.

In the early morning hours of Thurs., April 9, 2015, the Lord called Catherine home and said, “Well done thy good and faithful servant; well done.”

She confessed to Christ at an early age by joining Mt. Moriah Baptist Church of Butler County. After moving to Andalusia, she united with Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and later joined St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful member until her death.

She graduated from Covington County Training School and began working at the Andalusia Memorial Hospital. While working for Dr. William G. Cumbie, she earned her nursing degree at MacArthur Technical School in Opp. She retired as a state employee from the Covington County Health Department after 22 years of service.

She was a very loving and outgoing person. She was one of the co-founders of St. Peter’s annual observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and a member of the Nine of Hearts Social Club. She was also a faithful and loyal member of the Order of Eastern Star, Morton Chapter No. 258.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cleve and Pauline Griffin; an infant sister, Verla Griffin; brothers, Ethel and Paul Griffin; and her beloved friend and companion, Mr. Leroy Byrd Sr.

Her life and memories will be cherished forever by her loving and devoted daughter, Alline Crittenden of Andalusia; grandson, Bobby (Keisha) Jackson of Hoover; granddaughter, Kathryn of Atlanta, Ga.; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Kennedy Jackson and Cameron Crittenden; special nephew, Jimmy (Betty) McClain of Rutledge and Paula (Ademola) Griffin-Raisre of Douglasville, Ga.; the children and family of the late Mr. Leroy Byrd Sr.; a special friend, Mrs. Ruth Flowers; and a host of nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends throughout the community.

Pallbearers include Eddie Lott, Hilry Trawick, Willie Jean Peterson, Leroy Byrd Jr., Robert Oliver and Douglas Walker.

Funeral services for Catherine were held on Tues., April 14, 2015, at St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church and the Rev. Bobby C. Rhodes officiated.

CAROLYN STARNES WEED

Mrs. Carolyn Starnes Weed, 71, of Andalusia, died on Thurs., April 16, 2015, at her residence. Funeral services for Mrs. Weed will be held tomorrow, Sun., April 19, 2015, at 2 p.m. from Foreman Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Durwood Cleland officiating. Interment will follow in Andalusia Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services.

Mrs. Weed is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jon and Beth Weed of Andalusia; seven grandchildren, Jonathan Weed, Catherine Weed, Jessica Denny (fiancé-Walter Bowlan Jr.), Kayla (Justin) Dewrell, Nolan Denny, Shana Denny and Miranda Denny; two great-grandchildren, Taylor McKenzie and Brynnleigh Worley; and two nephews, Van (Lynn) Starnes and Kenny (Lisa) Starnes.

Mrs. Weed was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Mac Weed; a daughter, Melinda Weed Denny; and parents, Earley and Uldiene Starnes.

Pallbearers will be Albert Cravey, Campbell Kyle, Johnny Duggan, Justin Dewrell, Walter Bowlan Jr. and Darrell Denny.
