Quick trips close to home

For most of the students in Covington County, summer is here, and for the rest, summer will be here before the next week is over.

Summer is a time for family fun in the sun.

Covington County is in a unique place in that it is a central point from many locations around.

We compiled a “Five You Can Drive” for families who want to take a simple weekend or weekday trip out of town or in-county.

Surf’s Up!

Less than three hours away, families can sink their toes in the sand at Gulf Shores or Orange Beach.

Rent a lounge chair and umbrella and soak up some rays or for the outdoorsmen, rent kayaks or catamarans.

Bring your cooler and enjoy a picnic in the sand.

The Alabama Department of Tourism says that Gulf State Park is one of the best sites for which to take advantage.

The park features 3.5 miles of sugary sands and a 1,540 feet fishing pier.

All about the history

For the history buffs or families wanting to learn more about Alabama’s long history, take a trip to Goat Hill.

Located in downtown Montgomery, the state Capitol is a perfect day tour.

In 1861, the Confederate States of America were born in the Senate Chamber, where delegates from Southern states voted to establish a new nation. A little more than a century later, the Selma to Montgomery march ended in front of the Capitol.

Self-guided tours are available daily to individuals and small groups from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday: Guided tours are available at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. to individuals and groups. Closed Sundays and state holidays.

Outdoor fun!

Without leaving the comforts of Covington County, families can enjoy outdoor recreation at the Conecuh National Forest, Frank Jackson State Park and Florala State Park.

The Conecuh features hunting, camping, hiking, swimming and more.

At Florala State Park and Frank Jackson, enjoy swimming, boating and nature.

Land of Aviation

A short drive away, teach your child about aviation.

At the U.S. Army Aviation Museum, visitors can see the largest collection of U.S. military airplanes and helicopters, along with multiple exhibits.

Admission is free. It’s open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Vrrrooom Vrrrooom

Take a stroll in the fast lane, and drive 2.5 hours north to Alex City to the Wellborn MuscleCar Museum.

A large collection of muscle cars from 1969-1971 are on display. Vehicles include Chargers, Challengers, Barracudas, Chevelles, Mustangs, GTOs, Road Runners, the GSX and Sunbirds.
