Opp’s 12U All-Stars secured a spot on today’s championship game with a 3-0 win over Brewton on Friday night in Opp.

Brewton got a hit from Kyle Blevins with one-out in the top of the first, but the Opp squad kept Brewton off the scoreboard in the first.

Opp got a one-out hit from Tray Boutwell, but two strikeouts and a ground out ended the inning.

Boutwell remained strong on the mound in the top of second inning, and didn’t allow a hit.

Opp looked like it might get a one-out hit from Hal Smithart in the top of the second inning, but an amazing catch by Brewton center fielder Trent Cooper robbed Smithart of a hit. Cooper was running straight back towards the center field fence, when he held his glove up on the run slapping the ball. Cooper then somehow managed to corral the ball barehanded for the out.

Boutwell shutdown Brewton in the top half of the third inning, and hadn’t given up a hit since one out in the first inning.

Opp’s Case Short reached on an error to start the bottom of the third inning, but two straight fielder’s choices and a pop up ended the inning.

In the top of the fourth, Boutwell hit the first batter and walked the second batter, but bowed up and got the next two batters to strikeout looking. Boutwell got the last out by way of a groundout the shortstop.

In the bottom of the fourth, Jesse Coon stepped up to the plate and hammered the first pitch he saw deep over the fence in center field and over a utility truck fixing the scoreboard.

Brewton chase Boutwell in the top of the fifth inning after the first two batters reached on singles. Ballard Lane took over on the mound for Opp, and retired the first three batters he face on a groundout and two strikeouts.

Short led off the bottom of the fifth with a single, and Thomas Glisson moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Lane followed with a RBI double, and later scored on a passed ball to put Opp up 3-0.

In the top of the sixth, Lane got the first batter to ground softly back to pitchers mound for the first out, and then struck out the next to batters for the win.

Opp will be back in action today in the championship game at 4 p.m., against the winner of Covington County and Brewton.

COVINGTON 6 EAST BREWTON 1

The Covington County 12U All-Stars battled their way through the loser’s bracket, and are one win away from the championship game after eliminating East Brewton with a 6-1 win Friday night in Opp.

Jake Wilson started on the mound for the County All-Stars, and he opened up the game by striking out the first two batters he faced.

Aden Amis reached in the bottom second on an error, and Gabrien Dunn moved him over to third with single.

Jon Jon Dewrell followed with a sacrifice to drive in the Amis for the first run of the contest.

Wilson continued to rock on the mound in the second inning after retiring the East Brewton squad in order.

In the bottom of the second, the County was also shut down in order.

In the top of the third, Wilson walked the first batter, but a line drive to Dewrell at first, who then stepped on the bag ahead of the retreating runner for a double play, erased the East Brewton runner.

Braxton Lee led off the bottom of the third with a single, Wilson reached on error and Amis drew a walk to load the bases for Dewrell. Dewrell responded by driving a ball deep to center field off the base of the fence for a two-run double. During confusion, Amis took advantage and swiped home while the East Brewton squad was caught napping. Amis’s run put the County on top 4-0.

Two straight hit batters started the top of the fourth inning for East Brewton, but a strikeout, a heads up play to nail a runner heading home and a groundout to shortstop ended the East Brewton threat.

The County squad added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, and East Brewton pushed one run across in the final inning.

Covington County turned right around and played Brewton with the winner advancing into the today’s championship game against Opp, but the game was not completed when the Star-News went to press.
