Opp Shine Program students reel in big fish at LBWCC

Kids were reeling in fish at McArthur Pond on the campus of LBWCC in Opp Thursday morning as a part of the Shine Program.

The Shine Program is for students in grades 1-8 and is held at Opp Elementary School.

For two weeks before and after July 4, students participate in activities designed to keep them learning, coordinator Sharon Spurlin said. The students meet Tuesday through Thursday.

“We hope to see when they come back to school that they don’t have a big regression,” Spurlin said. “Some kids may get tired of school, so we try to have some fun things.”

OES Principal Brett Kinsaul said the students learned about earth worms this week, and celebrated their learning by going fishing at the pond. Last week, a meteorologist from WSFA visited the program to talk about weather.

“This has been a fun program for the students,” Kinsaul said. “The teachers have really had a good time. It’s been a relaxed atmosphere for them.”

Kinsaul said Emily Edgar, the assistant superintendent of education for Opp City Schools, has been a vital part of the program.
