Councilmember: Is Opp a speed trap?

Councilwoman Mary Brundidge said Monday night she was concerned that Opp will be labeled a speed trap.

“Getting back to Rick (Clifton) on the traffic, it has been diverted to other highways,” she said. “Is that because Opp might have a speed trap?”

Covington County Economic Development Commission director Rick Clifton had earlier talked with the council about GPS systems routing beach traffic away from Opp.

Brundidge is retired from the OPD, where she worked as a dispatcher.

Opp Police Department Assistant Chief Kevin Chance said patrol officers regularly work the bypass.

“We run radar,” he said. “We catch people going 75-80, even 90 and occasionally over 100. We do have to work the bypass.”

Chance said there are wrecks on the bypass, citing a weekend wreck that claimed the life of an Elba man.
