If sales tax collections are any inclination of the local economy – there is some growth.

Covington County saw a 38,389 increase over September 2014, collecting $711,873

For the fiscal year ending Oct. 31, the county also saw an increase from $8.2 million to $8.6 million.

In Opp, the city saw a $20,812 increase over last September, collecting $188,569.

Opp saw an increase for the FY15 at $2.1 million collected.

“We are growing,” Opp Mayor John Bartholomew said. “We are excited about it. We are setting things up for more growth.”

Bartholomew said he believes that things the council is doing such as cleaning up the city and stores staying open later are helping the town.

“It’s important for our citizens to shop Opp,” he said.

In Andalusia, collections were up $18,536 over September 2014.

A two-year comparison done by the city shows that year to date, collections are down by $246,887. “We’re off approximately 4 percent year to date from last year and the months that are off are spring and summer, which lead us to believe that it coincides with the DOT’s repair of a bridge near Florala,” Andalusia City Clerk John Thompson said. “We’ve heard from some businesses on the west bypass that their business was down while the bridge was closed. The last two months were ahead of last year, so hopefully we’ll make up the difference by year’s end.
