Andalusia’s largest-ever 5K run/walk is on target to be as larger or larger this year, when it will be the official race of Three Notch Market.

In its inaugural year in 2015, sMiles for Megan had more than 500 people registered, and 340 participated. Many of the registrants were “virtual runners,” supporting the cause with a contribution and/or running the distance wherever they were that day. More than 400 have registered so far this year.

The event is a fundraiser for the Megan Kelley Smiles Foundation, formed in memory of the young woman who lost her battle with leukemia earlier this year. The foundation will provide support to young adults with cancer.

Donna Kelley, Megan’s mother, said many of the friends Megan made in her battle with cancer will be back for this year’s event. The event is even more poignant because Megan’s older brother, Michael Kelley, is performing on the festival stage as a soloist and with members of his band, Brave Heart. Michael Kelley also tours with the popular Christian artist Erik Bledsoe.

“Michael’s friends are doing the race and Erik Bledsoe’s family is coming,” Mrs. Kelley said. Michael Kelley is a senior at Belmont College, majoring in religion in the arts with a classical piano minor.

Because it is part of the festival, the location changed for the race this year. It will begin and end at Andalusia City Hall. More than 300 people were registered by April 20.

Online registration continues and can be accessed from an event page on Facebook, or by visiting Chronotrack.com. Registration is $25.

The event begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning, and late registration can be completed on site beginning at 6:30 on race day.

A package pick-up is scheduled for Andalusia City Hall from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday.
